That night I dreamed I was a small boy again. I was near the wharf at West Bay, playing in one of the small rodneys that the fishermen used to row out to their boats and often tie off at the stern to help in hauling nets. Preoccupied as little boys in boats tend to be, I failed to notice that the rodney had slipped its mooring and began to drift. A gentle westerly breeze blew the craft almost parallel to the beach. When I looked up and realized what was happening, I instinctively grabbed the oars, but they were slick with kelpy bilge and slid from my hands into the water. I quickly reached out for them, but they sank into the water as if they were lead. They fell to the very bottom and were instantly covered in smooth white pebbles. I stood in the boat, and as I did, Charlotte and Isabella appeared on the beach. They were crying at first, but then as the tide began to pull the rodney out to sea, they seemed to accept that there was little they could do but watch me drift away. Then suddenly, as if through some revelation, they called out to me excitedly. But their voices were lost in the wind and waves. I strained to make out the words. Then, as if sensing I could not hear, they waved their arms and made all manner of gesticulation, as if on stage, in a dumbshow play that demanded the actors communicate the scene without ever speaking. But the little boat simply drifted further out to sea on the tide, and my sisters, though never stopping their frantic movements, faded from view.
